Welcome To The Veterans Committee Information Blog

Veterans View

The month of March was predominantly spent planning for the upcoming years events. On April 10th there will be a Chili/Chowder cook-off downstairs at the lodge. This will be a part of the overall fundraising effort to help homeless veterans as part of Togus’ VA2K, which will be May 19th. There is also a bright yellow box upstairs at the lodge to assist in collecting items to donate to this cause – you should be aware that there is a little competition going on between the Lodges on this one! Prize (to be determined) going to the Lodge that raises the most for our homeless vets. I am confident that we will make a great showing and the Vets will be the big winners!! More information on the cook-off and the VA2K can be found on the website at http://augustaelks.org/ veteranscommittee/ or please feel free to ask me questions!

In addition to the annual Stand-Down, there are also plans in the works for a Veterans Appreciation event to be held at the Lodge this year and discussions on other events focused on helping our Veterans in other ways. Stay tuned for more information. Volunteers are always needed and appreciated!

Speaking of volunteers, our own Norman Grasse was recognized for all of his efforts on behalf of veterans at the Installation of Officers on March 19th. A veteran himself, Norm has been valuable to our efforts with the VA2K, Stand Down, and any other activity we have. He is always quick to step up and offer assistance and is truly appreciated by everyone who knows him. Congratulations Norm!

Respectfully submitted,
Karen Curtis Veterans Affairs Chairman

On Dec 3rd, Karen Curtis attended a graduation of 4 veterans receiving their diplomas and their dogs having completed their training. Karen Curtis representing the Augusta Elks was there to present a check in the amount of $5700 which was the proceeds from this past summers “ Elks Summer Music Festival” benefiting the K9’s on the front line and Maine Childrens Cancer. The Veterans and our children are the largest of the many fund raising functions that are held at the Augusta Elks lodge each year. Attached are a few pictures from Karen’s presentation. Once again the Augusta Elks is proving that the Elks is a great organization that work hard to provide to those in need in our community

God Bless our Veterans and our Children.
